CONSERVATION DETECTION

:: BRAND NEW FOR 2026 ::

We all know dogs have incredible noses — and around here, Hannah is a little (okay, a lot) obsessed with what those noses can do for the world. That curiosity led us straight into the exciting field of Conservation Detection: training dogs to locate invasive species, endangered wildlife, and other ecological targets using scent.

Today, Hannah and the Wildlings are training for conservation detection while building Michigan's first Citizen Science conservation detection program, inviting everyday dog-and-handler teams to become part of real conservation efforts. It all started with an unusual birthday gift: Spotted Lanternfly egg masses. A fun training project with the Wildlings quickly grew into collaborations with researchers and conservation partners, opening the door to exciting new projects across Michigan.
